01 — Course Profile
Colonial CC fingerprint.
Par 70 with only two par 5s. Third-narrowest fairways on Tour at 27 yards average. Small bentgrass greens rebuilt by Gil Hanse in 2023–24. The course demands approach precision and driving accuracy at weights that don't exist at any other venue in the model. Distance is structurally irrelevant here — nine par-4s measure under 450 yards, clustering approach shots in the 125-175 yard range.
The Hanse renovation is the most important contextual factor for the model. The current course shares minimal resemblance with Colonial before 2023. Pre-2022 course history carries a significant discount. Post-renovation results (2023, 2024, 2025) are weighted normally. The new green complexes place a higher premium on approach precision than the old surfaces did — the model's 32% APP weight reflects that directly.
SG: Approach (APP)
32% — #1 signal
Highest APP weight of any course in the model. 125–175 yard band is where Colonial scoring happens. Davis Riley led the field in APP in 2024. Ben Griffin was top 5 in 2025.
SG: Putting (Bentgrass)
22% — #2
Small, quick bentgrass greens. Ben Griffin won 2025 while leading the field in putting. Negative bentgrass putters are exposed consistently here.
Driving Accuracy %
16% — #3
Third-narrowest fairways. Restricted approaches from rough are common on several holes. Market consistently underprices this stat in outright pricing at Colonial.
Proximity 125–175 yds
16% combined
Nine par-4s under 450 yards concentrate scoring opportunities in this yardage band. Split between 125–150 (8%) and 150–175 (8%).
SG: Off the Tee (OTT)
3% — structural fade
Par 70 with two par 5s. Distance premium essentially zero. Pure bombers at sub-+1000 odds are structural fades here regardless of form.
02 — Field Notes
2026 field context.
The 2026 Schwab Challenge field was a full 156-player open field — no signature event cut in place. Scottie Scheffler played. Rory McIlroy came in on form. The European contingent that historically performs at precision-demand venues was well represented. Defending champion Ben Griffin was in the field with back-to-back top-5 history at Colonial.
Model input note — 2026
Course history bonus applied only to 2023, 2024, and 2025 results at the renovated Colonial. Players with results exclusively pre-2023 received no course history input. Post-renovation winners (Griffin 2025, Bradley 2024, Grillo 2023) provided the clearest winner DNA template.
03 — Model Output
2026 rankings preview.
Top model outputs from the 2026 run. Full rankings, edge percentages, and complete picks card were published in the Substack newsletter. Confirmed bets are in the pick tracker.
Model top output
Approach-first profile
Model #1 and #2 outputs were players ranked top-10 in SG: Approach with neutral or better driving accuracy and bentgrass putting.
Value screen leader
Course specialist + edge
Highest positive edge plays identified players with post-renovation course history bonus AND positive APP trend in the prior 4 events, priced at longer odds than the model probability justified.
Structural fade
OTT-dominant favorites
Players priced primarily on driving distance/OTT at Colonial are systematic fades. The model flagged multiple players below +1200 as negative-edge outrights.
Betting angle
Finish markets over outrights
Top 10 / Top 20 markets at Colonial historically offer better risk-adjusted value than outrights. Leaderboard compression from near-par scoring conditions amplifies this advantage.
