Course Guide · Precision Test
ColonialCC.
Charles Schwab Challenge · Par 70 · 7,289 yards · Fort Worth, Texas
One of the oldest host venues on Tour — Ben Hogan won here five times. Par 70 with only two par 5s, third-narrowest fairways at 27 yards average, small bentgrass greens rebuilt by Gil Hanse in 2023-24. Distance is nearly irrelevant. Approach precision wins here.

01 — Course Profile
Colonial CC's fingerprint.
Par 70 with only two par 5s. That single fact reshapes the entire statistical model. Distance off the tee generates almost no structural advantage at Colonial. Nine par-4s measure under 450 yards, clustering approach shots heavily in the 125-175 yard range. The course plays to iron precision, not power.
Fairway width of 27 yards average ranks third-tightest on Tour. On several tree-lined holes, missing the fairway leaves a restricted or blind second shot regardless of yardage. This is why Driving Accuracy at 16% in the regression isn't a checkbox — it's a genuine gate the market consistently underweights in outright pricing.
The Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner renovation in 2023–24 updated green complexes and tightened several corridors. For betting, this is the most important contextual factor: pre-2022 results carry diminished predictive weight. The model applies a course history discount for anything pre-renovation.
02 — Model Weights
What actually predicts at Colonial.
SG: Approach (APP)
32% — #1
Primary signal. 125–175 yard band is where Colonial is won. Davis Riley led the field in APP in 2024.
SG: Putting (Bentgrass)
22% — #2
Small bentgrass greens demand consistency. Ben Griffin led the field in putting in 2025 en route to his win.
Driving Accuracy %
16% — #3
Third-narrowest fairways. Missing punishes regardless of distance. Market routinely underprices this.
Prox 125–175 yds
16% combined
The primary approach band at Colonial. Nine par-4s under 450 yards concentrate shots here.
SG: Around Green (ARG)
5% — #5
Lower weight than most courses. Approach quality is the primary error-prevention mechanism here.
SG: Off the Tee (OTT)
3% — fade signal
Par 70. Two par 5s. Bomber premium is near zero. Compare to Quail Hollow at 18%. Completely different profiles.
03 — Winner DNA
Recent winners at Colonial CC.
| Year | Winner | Score | Key stat |
| 2025 | Ben Griffin | −19 | Led field in putting. APP top 10. Defended Hogan's Alley course fit. |
| 2024 | Keegan Bradley | −17 | +7.4 SG: APP for the week. Elite driving accuracy. Classic Colonial profile. |
| 2023 | Emiliano Grillo | −16 | Two-time prior top-3. Course specialist. APP + Accuracy combination. |
| 2022 | Jason Kokrak | −14 | Pre-renovation. Diminished predictive weight for current model. |
Pattern
Every post-renovation winner profiles as top-20 in SG: Approach with at least neutral Driving Accuracy. No winner since 2023 has ranked outside the top 40 in the field in APP for the week.
04 — Betting Angles
Annual framework for Colonial.
01
Target APP + Bentgrass putting overlap
Players in the top 20 of SG: Approach who also rank top 40 in bentgrass-specific putting. That two-category overlap is the Colonial winner profile more consistently than any other pairing.
02
Driving Accuracy inside top 50 field
Narrow fairways create an invisible structural filter. Players below top 50 in DA are fighting the course layout on multiple holes regardless of distance.
03
Post-renovation history only
Course history bonus applies only for 2023+ results. Do not weight 2022 and earlier equally. The Hanse renovation changed enough that older results add noise, not signal.
04
Fade pure bombers at premium prices
OTT at 3% weight. Par 70 with two par 5s. The distance premium evaporates here. Outright favorites priced heavily on driving distance are structural fades regardless of overall form.
05
Finish markets over outrights
Top 10 / Top 20 markets carry better value than outrights at Colonial. Leaderboard compression is common and winners have come at +3000 or better in three of the last four editions.
