Distance Meets Precision
TPC Craig Ranch opened in 2004 and became the permanent host of what is now the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in 2021. It's a modern TPC design in suburban Dallas, and it plays nothing like the other Texas stop, Colonial. Where Colonial is a par-70 precision grind, Craig Ranch is a par-72 scoring event where aggregate distance carries genuine leverage.
Four par 5s change the structural math entirely. On holes where players can reach in two, distance off the tee becomes a direct scoring input, not just a setup factor. The model runs OTT at 20% here — roughly six times the weight it carries at Colonial. That number isn't arbitrary; it's built from par-5 scoring data going back to the course's first Tour hosting years.
Bermudagrass greens rather than bentgrass mean the putting profile requires specific treatment. Tour averages for SG: Putting are surface-agnostic in the raw CSV data, so the model filters specifically for Bermuda performance when available. Players who are great overall putters but below average on Bermuda get a haircut in the ranking.
North Texas wind plays a role that doesn't show up in stat sheets. The back nine at Craig Ranch is exposed, and wind from the north can turn comfortable approach yardages into two-club wind scenarios. The model applies a secondary adjustment for ball-flight trajectory profiles on approach stats, specifically for players who struggle with the wind-exposed slots.
Why Weights Differ So Sharply
| Stat | TPC Craig Ranch | Colonial CC |
|---|---|---|
| SG: Approach | 28% | 32% |
| SG: Off the Tee | 20% | 3% |
| SG: Putting | 18% (Bermuda) | 22% (Bentgrass) |
| SG: Around Green | 14% | 5% |
| Driving Accuracy | ~5% | 16% |
| Driving Distance | 12% | ~0% |
The OTT and DA contrast is the most important line in that table. At Colonial, Driving Accuracy is a genuine gate at 16% weight because narrow fairways create blind and restricted approach shots. At Craig Ranch, wider fairways reduce the DA penalty and amplify the distance upside. The two venues actively reward opposite ends of the driver profile. A player who wins Colonial on the strength of their accuracy can lose at Craig Ranch by the same margin because the driving component doesn't translate.

Annual Framework
- Target players who rank top 25 in both SG: Approach and SG: Off the Tee. The two-category combination is the Craig Ranch winner profile more consistently than any other pairing.
- Bermuda putting matters here but with less force than bentgrass putting does at Colonial. A mild negative on Bermuda won't kill a strong APP+OTT profile, but a serious negative (bottom third of field) is a red flag worth weighting in your fade decisions.
- Par-5 scoring rate is the most underpriced market angle. Players ranked top 10 in par-5 scoring who are above average across other categories deserve an upward odds adjustment relative to the outright market.
- North Texas weather weeks can compress or expand the model weights on the fly. Wind-sensitive players (low ball flight, poor approach numbers in wind-adjusted data) carry more downside in exposed weeks.
- Course history at Craig Ranch has limited signal depth — only four years of data at the current host venue. Weight it, but not over an equally strong statistical profile from a different course type.
- Fade expensive short prices aggressively here. Craig Ranch has produced multiple winners above +4000 odds in recent editions. The field compression on a wide-open par-72 scoring course creates genuine upside at mid-range prices.
